In a powerful step towards holistic child care, Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), in collaboration with Umeed Parr and The Dawood Foundation, has introduced TAALEEM, an in-hospital programme that brings learning to children, undergoing cancer treatment. This initiative aims to ensure that these children remain engaged, curious, and connected to learning throughout their treatment.
At the heart of this initiative is a simple truth: that every child, even while facing illness, deserves laughter, learning, and the comfort of feeling seen, heard, and cared for.
Designed for children between the ages of 5 and 15 - the programme introduces informal, flexible learning within the paediatric oncology department at AKUH. Recognising that traditional classroom settings are not always feasible for children undergoing treatment, the initiative focuses on bedside learning, ensuring that education meets each child where they are - physically and emotionally.
Dedicated teaching staff has been appointed for the programme and conducts sessions thrice a week, working closely with young patients to create an engaging and comforting learning environment.
Rather than following a rigid curriculum, the programme is built around weekly themes that are simple, relatable, and meaningful. These themes are carefully designed to help children:
Whether it’s exploring nature, understanding emotions, or engaging in creative expression, each session is tailored to the child’s pace, energy levels, and interests.
The initiative also extends to children in the bone marrow transplant unit, ensuring that even those in the more critical stages of treatment are not left behind. Through one-on-one interactions and personalised activities, the programme creates moments of joy, distraction, and growth during an otherwise challenging journey.
Hospitals are often associated with treatment and recovery, but for children at AKUH, healing goes beyond medicine. Initiatives like these recognise the importance of emotional, social, and cognitive well-being as essential components of care.
This collaboration reflects a shared vision between AKUH, Umeed Parr, and The Dawood Foundation: to restore a sense of childhood even in the most difficult circumstances. By bringing learning into hospital rooms, this initiative does more than educate: it uplifts, empowers, and reminds every child that their journey of growth continues, no matter where they are.
